Do you live in constant fear and anxiety? Are the happy times being marred by anxious overwhelming feelings? There are so many things that can cause anxiety. Chaotic family life that involved alcohol or drugs or some other addiction. Childhood emotional/physical neglect. The list is long. There are ways to work through these events and issues and once processed you will find that the anxiety you have experience for so long will lessen. When we live with anxiety, it limits our choices and affects our enjoyment of just being in the moment. Life will always trigger our vulnerabilities and insecurities but as we work towards understanding ourselves we find life becomes much easier to navigate.
Relationship Counselling Central London
The most important relationship is the one we have with ourselves, we are the only person where we know exactly what is being thought and felt (well ideally!). Working towards knowing yourself and how your childhood affected you is a start to explore why the issues you are facing as an adult are so problematic. If we do not understand our history, then we are likely to repeat old dysfunctional ways of being with the people around us.
Think about how you are in relationships generally are you overwhelmed by them? Do you fear rejection or abandonment to such an extent it is easier to sabotage them rather than be left? When someone leaves you is the pain unbearable? These patterns of behaviour are learnt in childhood and while it does take hard work to understand them and process them it can be done, and we can change behaviour that causes us so much pain and misery.
Depression Counselling London
Anyone suffering from depression knows how debilitating it is. Medication can be helpful but does not get to the root cause of the problem. You may be aware of the underlying issues that are causing you to feel depressed, but you don’t know how to fix this. You might feel that you are going around in circles with friends and family and finding no resolution. A counsellor can help guide you towards exploring the feelings that you are dealing with, the sadness, the anger, the resentment and once you start to understand and process these feelings the depression will lift.
I work with sub-personalities and the question I often ask a client is which part of you feels sad or angry? It might sound a bit strange but if you think about it, how often are you critical of yourself? How often are you judging yourself as stupid? More often than not we are so used to treating ourselves in such a harsh, judgmental way we don’t even realise how bad it is.
EFT Counsellor Central London
Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) sometimes known as ‘tapping’ is a technique that works on the same principle as acupuncture, but no needles are used. While focussing attention on uncomfortable or painful thoughts and feelings we tap on a sequence of points on the face and body which helps bring down the intensity of those sensations. The theory is that we are unblocking energy in the meridian system that allows for a reset in the old part of the brain that is concerned with the freeze, flight or fight connection. I have found EFT to be a very effective tool for depression, anxiety, phobias and OCD.
I have worked with many clients who have had alcoholic/drug addicted, parents and so many of the issues they deal with are complicated. Many are co-dependant and suffer from fear of being abandoned, very low self-esteem and confidence. While these issues can find relief in just talking when combined with EFT the anxiety and fear lessens quite dramatically. This makes it easier for painful memories to be accessed and while we cannot change history we can change the emotional component of a painful memory. Most people carry painful memories and beliefs and different situations and relationships can trigger these. Using EFT as a tool means that you have at your disposal a way to calm your anxiety and fears.
Working with the younger parts of ourselves that have been abandoned and rejected we can work with Matrix Re-Imprinting a technique that enables us to reconnect with these parts. If there has been trauma and to survive that trauma we had to split off parts of ourselves these techniques can help to heal the pain around that trauma and enable us to start to heal.
Psychosynthesis Counselling Central London and EFT Counsellor Central London
I combine the framework and techniques of Psychosynthesis Counselling and EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques or Tapping) to work through phobias, compulsive behaviour and other heavy emotional states such as depression and anxiety. I have worked very successfully with people who have struggled with various issues for years and giving them a framework and tools to help them alleviate fear and anxiety that has enabled them to work through their presenting issues.
Psychosynthesis incorporates a wide range of techniques when working with uncomfortable feelings. Sometimes it is impossible to use words to describe how bad we feel but through drawing, chair work or using imagery it is possible to find a way to understand a situation or even another person’s perspective.
